Rent

I remembered why I loved acting in high school as I finished watching the final broadway performance of RENT tonight. As part of almost every show during my 4 years of high school, RENT was always playing over the speakers during set construction, in the green room during line studies and in the makeup room while we were getting ready. I remember at the time only liking some of the songs, never knowing exactly what the story was because I had never seen a performance of the show.

But even without knowing the story, I still enjoyed the awesome that is that show and have grown to love it more as I’ve gotten older.

I dont know if it’s because listening to the show brings back memories of high school or if what but either way, I still belt out every line (of the songs I know), try to harmonize with the different parts (that’s not an easy feat mind you) and tear up at the end. All three of those I did tonight while watching the performance on the big screen. It made me feel like I was there again (having seen the show quite a few years ago now) and I enjoyed every minute of it.

I know there are some who don’t like or understand the show. I know those who don’t have their reasons which vary greatly from one another. I know it’s not a normal show or one that fits “the norm” of the musical realm but that might be what makes it so special. I don’t believe the popularity stems from the unfortunate and untimely death of it’s creator. I truly believe it comes from the fact that the show is different. It’s funny. It’s catchy and well done.

If you disagree that’s fine but it wont sway my opinion or the feelings/memories/emotions I have to go along with it.

There’s no day but today.
